Battery hens and claws
« on: October 25, 2009, 19:39 »
Good Evening

My neighbour picked up a few ex battery hens today, and I have taken two of them as my 6 chicks have turned into 3 boys and 3 girls :(, (need to re-home the boys)

I was really shocked at the length of claw on the hens, would it be ok to clip them back? some of the hens had a job to stand!  Would this be due entirey to their claws or are they kept in cramp conditions, and not used to standing?

I have seen how meat hens are kept, but I have no idea of the living conditions of egg hens.  Can imagine it is not a pretty sight though.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Jo

Leave the claws if it is not hindering the movement of the chicken.
They wear them down in no time.

Our ex batts came from battery hen welfare trust, and they had their nails clipped before being rehomed.  It its a problem, perhaps go back to where they came from for some help?
