Hi
having finally plumped for field beans for our plot, I find they come with no instructions re depth spacing between seeds or rows. Can anyone offer any advice as the seed company didnt include any!!!

Can you also use broad beans as a green manure? Would you have to dig them in before they produce beans?

Broadcast them so they are about 4 inches apart and then fork over the soil to bury them. You should aim to bury them about 3 inches deep. Some will end up deeper or shallower but that will not matter. Farmers oftem broadcast them and then shallow plough.

They are not good at smothering weeds but if chickweed or similar annuals grow they can be dug in as green manure with the beans.

They emerge but not grow much until the Spring when they will grow away quickly. Either dig them in as soon as there is enough bulk or cut them down and let them grow up again.

Do not put them where you want to sow ealy crops or they will not have time to produce worthwhile bulk
