Taking Off Sprout Leaves
« on: October 23, 2009, 23:12 »
I've been dutifully pulling the yellowing leaves off of my sprouts but today I noticed one of the old boys has trimmed most of the leaves from his sprouts!

Is it beneficial to cut away the leaves or am I better off just removing the yellow ones as and when I need to?

As you can probably tell this is my first year growing sprouts (can't wait to try them!) :D

No amount of time can erase the memory of a good cat, and no amount of masking tape can ever totally remove his fur from your couch.

I could give up chocolate but I'm not a quitter.

I only take off the yellowing ones. The leaves are the food factory for the plant.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks Dave... I thought that was the case.

Mine have been happily sitting under netting since they were planted and are lovely and green where as a lot on our site have been ravaged (although I hadn't noticed this problem with the old boys sprouts!)

Im glad this question was asked.

I happened to be working next to a site yesterday and went and had a look. I also noticed some plots had a stem full of sprouts sticking up with no leaves on what so ever. the sprouts where bigger than on mine but they seemed less 'tight' if u know what i mean.

So i was also wondering about this practise even tho i dont think i will be taking it up.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

I always remove the leaves below the picked sprouts.

I agree with Dave, just remove the dead or dying leaves. :D

I think some of the "oldboys" on our plot have removed the lower leaves to reduce the number of white fly - anyone know how to get rid of these critters??

Before anyone replies spray with a solution of soapy water to the last question, I'll state at this point that I have the cleanest whitefly on our site.

I agree DD the soapy water seems to be controlling the numbers a bit....but it ain't getting rid of the little bs >:(

Must admit though, that the bug spray didn't either
