Planting raspberry canes and moving next year?
« on: October 20, 2009, 12:58 »
I really want to try and get some raspberries in and I have just seen some canes for sale in one of those suppliments in this months gardeners world magazine.

I dont really have the planned fruit bed up and running yet and we have just harvested all our potatoes so theres now an 8' x 8' raised bed free and I was thinking about buying some canes and planting them in there now and then moving them next year into their permenent location when its ready.

Am i ok to do this ?

I wasnt sure if moving the canes next year would be a bad idea (after all you would buy them in pots with compost that I am sure have been grown from canes anyway!?).

By the way - Anyone recommend a decent variety and supplier ?

thanks for any help!

Mark

I did exactly that this time last year. I put the canes (a gift ) in a raised bed and left them there till they started to bud in spring then moved them to the proper bed.
It seemed to do them no harm and i`m still getting late raspberries off them. :)

Decent varieties depend on your personal taste, site and soil type. I believe Ken Muir has been recommennded on here so his website is worth a look. I am a bit leery about GW plant offers and their usual supplier. I would prefer to go for quality via a specialist, or a good garden centre where you can choose the canes - they are a long term item so worth paying a bit more, although some people on here have had good value fruit plants from Aldi etc. I'd suggest googling for suitable varieties and shop around before you buy.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
