1" hole appeared in my lawn at leats a foot deep,I filled it in and overnight another appeared 2 ft. away.  Any Ideas please??

What sort of hole ?   Earth thrown up around it ?

I had a similar experience that caused me much head scratching many years ago.
Eventually I traced the start of the tunnels back to a manhole about 8 feet from the holes.
The culprit. Mr Rat.

We get a lot of cricket holes in the drier parts of the lawn, but I think they're smaller than 1 inch (never measured). Plus the occasional mouse hole.

As long as it's not moles or wasps, you're not in mortal danger

The mice that live in our garden make holes like that.. Its not moles, you'd know about it then  .

There won't be any earth around a rat hole if its coming up through your lawn. The earth will have all been behind the emerging offender.
Don't be fooled by the small hole; a rat can easily navigate through a hole or tunnel the circumference of a golf ball.

I don't know if your intruder is definitely a rat, but I sure wouldn't rule out the possibility.
