Who's digging up our spuds?
« on: October 18, 2009, 15:50 »
The last few visits to our allotment has given cause for concern.  It seems that something is burrowing/digging up our main crop potatoes and leaving the spuds on the surface, not eaten and have claw marks.  Also they are leaving their feces on the same ground which seems to contain some evidence of apple pips (not that I regularly examine animal feces!).

I'm queen of my own compost heap and I'm getting used to the smell.

What kind of poop, big or small? Rodent, bigger?

The feces is dog-sized, medium size animal, no smell. There is evidence of entry under the allotment boundary fence.

On our site, which is quite rural,  a few plots have had big holes dug in them, leaving plants lying about on the surface uneaten. Probably badgers digging for worms in our nice soft soil!  There is evidence of badger latrines having been dug and used!!  One oldtimer on our plot said there used to be a badgers set actually on the site a few years ago when it was v. neglected. There are some unused overgrown plots next door which have old concrete bases that have been excavated underneath. They are probably holed up in there.
I'm quite excited about the prospect of seeing a badger. A few of us have been down there in the dark, badger spotting, but no luck yet.
Do we need to worry about TB or is that all a myth?

Badgers usually poop in latrines, holes dug about 6 inches deep and pooped in, usually a loose consistency and quite disgusting. If there are definate shaped poops it may be a fox digging out worms or mice.
