came across a mineral block in the local pet shop yeaterday - marketed for pigeons but I'm sure that isn't an issue.  Conatined magnesium among others and a bargain at £1.39  8)

Maybe this would do?  Is in a solid block form but could be ground down for our chooks?...

It may be the 66% ash content that will be the problem with homemade poultry spice , have a look here,

Garlic is a great de-wormer for any animal. I ensure that all my birds, rabbits and cats get their fair share of it. I grow it in my back garden (just plant the separated cloves in order to get bulbs) and then crush it into their feed. It's also good for the blood, so I have read...ah well, at least the vampires won't get them!

Interesting reading, perhaps we just need to make sure that the chooks get plenty of minerals in any 'format'?

Shame it isn't fireplace ash - we have loads of that!
