homemade poultry spice
« on: October 14, 2009, 15:58 »
Hello

Having just bought some Poultry Spice and seen a list of the ingredients, most of which I have in my cupboard ... just wondered if anyone had ever made some at home??  Did your hens like it?

Ingredients listed on this one are --->

minerals, micronised wheat,  ginger, turmeric,

don't really know if it would be possible to make your own, but I do have wheat, ginger and turmeric, so makes you wonder

I think it may be the 'minerals' that make it what it is. Could be any mix of trace minerals and if you get the wrong ones or the wrong quantities, it may not be so effective.

Also, how would you make 'micronised' wheat ?   With a big hammer ?

I'm sure you can buy fenugreek as a cooking ingredient, think I've seen it in Sainsburys.

As for the mineral I have absolutely no idea what sort of things it would be made of.

An old fella I know swears by turmeric and garlic for his hens and horses.

great idea coco.

googled 'micronized'. apparentley you need supercritical fluids or something to do this the modern way!!

Wikipedia had a traditional method that sounds like grinding or milling. So, do you think wheatgerm would do? or does it have to be finer than that?

turmeric eh?????   No wonder the yolks are so yellow!!!!   :D :D

I think I'll leave the scientific bits to the scientists, but there's no harm in trying the old remedies too.  Just wish I cold remember some of them!!!! ???

Darn! googled all afternoon and no luck - I only found recipes to cook chooks too  :(

Does sound like the 'minerals' are what make it - at least what make it expensive...am going to give growing the ingredients a go and see what happens...

Garlic - check

Err....fenugreek? .... (off to google...)

If they were using exotic minerals then I'm sure they'd make sure that you knew about it. Guesses are it's mainly calcium, probably some magnesium (thinking limestone/chalk/ground shells here). Once upon a time I dealt with a large egg processor and they had trouble getting rid of shells so these would be a cheap and sensible source of minerals for chooks. Can't do worse than solve your problem of shell disposal by baking and crushing just as suggested in several books/posts. I'm certainly going to have a trial.

came across a mineral block in the local pet shop yeaterday - marketed for pigeons but I'm sure that isn't an issue.  Conatined magnesium among others and a bargain at £1.39  8)

Maybe this would do?  Is in a solid block form but could be ground down for our chooks?...
