Bitter Swedes
« on: October 12, 2009, 20:01 »
Hi, anyone know why my swedes taste bitter? we did have a dry spell and i watered when i could but they were still on the dry side could this be the answer. It's a bit disapointing cos they're a decent size for a change, they were Invtation.

parsnips and turnips are sweeter after a couple of frosts. Never grown swede but may be the same?

Hi, good point i mean you don't normally lift swede till later so i'll leave them and have another go i don't want to discard them having grown some decent ones for a change.

Hi, once again the old head gardener has come up trumps, ( good old National Trust ) it is lack of water. It seems they take up too strong a nutrients from the soil if not diluted by plenty of water, so keep those swedes well watered.
