TLC for raised beds
« on: October 12, 2009, 11:50 »
My raised beds are now 3 years old and I think they are tired. I didn't grow much this year because I was too busy finishing my MSc but what I did grow didn't do very well. They clearly need some more compost digging in to raise the level and revitalise them.

Any other suggetions as to what to add to bring them back to life?

Well rotted manure; fresh home made compost; comfrey?

I have 2 beds that struggled this year so I am digging it out and using the soil as mulch and filling with sieved lottie clay, home made compost and comfrey chopped up and mixed in.

I sowed green manure mustard on mine last week (because of the Aminopyralid problems with bought in manure). Will dig it in in the spring and use lots of chicken manure pellets.

I always use a sprinkle of blood fish and bone before I plant anything as well :)

Im doing the same as mumofstig but have a layer of  comfry leaves just put on instead of the mustard.

Intrestingly enough tho my neighbour has sown  mustard and im watchin with intrest.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Collect bags of dry leaves from people throwing them out, crunch up the leaves in some way (mower, kids stomping on them, etc) and mix those into the soil. Its amazing how they revitalize poor soil.
