What can I plant in my polytunnel now
« on: October 11, 2009, 09:08 »
We have just had our first summer with a polytunnel and had lots of success with tomatoes, chillies, peppers, cucumbers, aubergines, and cape gooseberries. We are in the process of clearing away the last of the tomato plants and were wondering what we can plant over winter. We have read somewhere that carrots can go in for Christmas, do they have to be a particular variety? What else can we plant in there as we have a few beds to fill?

Thanks in advance
Louisa

Ok - I thought the idea of polytunnels was that tomatoes et al could be extended over a longer season? I still have toms in the greenhouse and am expecting to for a while yet.

THese were put in quite early and there are no more flowers or fruit on them. We have a couple of plants still going strong as are the peppers and aurbergine.

We have 3 small beds spare and just want to make the most of them.

In my experience tomatoes go on cropping until the frost gets them, or they get too huge for the greenhouse/polytunnel, or you get fed up with them!  Mine are still going strong in the cold greenhouse.

Anyway, if you want to try carrots I would go for an early forcing variety like Amsterdam Forcing or you could grow winter hardy lettuces or spring onions or try one of those baby salad leaf mixtures.

I think your problem is going to be finding a source of the seeds.

Cheers,

Gillie

If you like salads there are at least a couple of winter hardy lettuce that should do well in there.  Arctid King is one variety, can't remember the other. If you put a search into Google you'll find loads of suggestions for all sorts of vegetable seeds/plants that will grow in a cold greenhouse or polytunnel through the winter.

Good luck!

Google will tell you where to get the seeds as well  if you don't mind paying the postage - often cheaper than driving around looking for them and usually within a 2-3 days in my experience.
