About a week but check every day, and keep the paper moist.

I planted well over 100, year old, dwarf beans into compost as an experiment expecting an almost nil germination rate.  I think every last bean must have popped up!!  Have planted out 50 into the garden, replaced 5 of those because of cat damage (stupid cat!), gave away about another 40 and still have around 40 left to plant somewhere else in the garden.  Think I shall be eating french beans every day til Christmas once they pod!  of course, that could be the catch, they germinate but they don't pod!!  still, they are taking up empty ground that needs some greenery so that is fine.

This is interesting as i'm just about to sow runner beans into pots.

So just to check, I sprout them on a plate on damp kitchen towel, then once they are sprouted, i plant them right-way-up in pots.

Easy as that?

Yes, except I use a covered plastic dish to retain moisture.  I also reckon you can put them straight into the ground once they sprout; I do.   Remember that the first sprout is a root, not a stalk, so you plant right-way-down as it were !!!

I have replied to a similar question after having similar problems, just be aware of the increased risk of halo blight on the french beans when pre germinated, this was my reply "Nowt wrong Yummy, I have problems this year too with them, I did email T&M about it, now they reccomend doing this-- pre soak the compost with cheshunt solution before sowing, put the bean into the compost and cover with vermiculite, now the method I have just used and been 100% is to soak the bean for 3 hours, nip the wrinkled bit with some nail clippers and then sow in a heated propogator, the only problem with this method is I believe it can increase the risk of halo blight. we will see."
