Derris
« on: October 08, 2009, 23:27 »
Does anyone know why we can no longer buy Derris either powder or liquid?  It is the one organic product that actually works?  Are we being manipulated by Monsanto again and their paid off government agents?
"Things" are the theives of time.

Peterjf, if the seller is a UK stockist then it has been illegal for them to sell it to you for a year.

It will be illegal for any UK person to store or use derris after the 10th October 2009.  This includes having it in your possession after importing it from abroad, if the seller is abroad.

The confirmation of the revocation can be found here if anyone needs to see the proof.

Whether we agree or not with the reasons behind the revocation of derris' licence, we cannot condone or encourage members to break the law.

Kanute, the reasons behind the revocation of the licence are, I suspect, because the company with the licence - did not consider it commercially viable to put the product through the battery of tests required by the EU to establish its safety against more stringent conditions.

Please don't get the site owner John into legal trouble by suggesting conspiracy theories against multi-national companies!  There are other forums more suited to that!!

Derris has been linked to neurological disorders.

Any company would be pretty daft to sell it if they could possibly be sued £millions in 20 years time.

I am glad to see the back of it. In most of Europe it has been banned for many years. It is very indiscriminate and kills predators as well as pests. If it gets into water the fish die.

Peterif - I shall look on Ebay and if it is advertised I will report it to Ebay so that it is removed, as should you!

I for one, have an old container of derris in the shed!!! Bought it from B&Q (own brand) years ago.

What is the legal standing on such situations?

Your local Council should have facilities for disposing of it safely. Ask them.

Glosterboy, it doesn't matter that the derris was bought some time ago.  If the active ingredient is rotenone, as it will almost certainly be if it bears the name derris, then that is what the revocation notice relates to.

Continued possession becomes illegal after 10th.

As Salmo says, it should be disposed of legally through your council local amenity site etc.

NB If you want to be sure about your particular product, post the MAFF product licence up and we can check its specific situation on the pesticides database.

Fine. I understand fully.

But, surely I must be one of thousands of gardeners who somewhere, albeit in the shed, garage, greenhouse or under the stairs still has a container of derris leftover from when it could be purchased from the local shops. As of the 10th October are in fact "breaking the law".

Would it be a good idea to bring this information to all members of this forum? Rather than the few who will read this thread?

I think it might be in the allotment newsletter which goes to thousands of subscribers and is definitely on the main website.

It's also on this thread - and if people don't read either this thread, called derris, or don't read the newsletter or the website, I'm not sure whether a fourth method of communication would be any more effective  :)
