You'll know that I am well into barter ... I agreed to look after next-doors chickens when they had a few days away.  I get to keep any eggs.   The deal is that they feed our cat when we are away & they get to keep any eggs.

Anyhow ... he said there would be 4 eggs per day, regular as clockwork.  So far, I've had 11 in 2 days !!   Only thing I've done different is give them some curly kale that I was pulling up - they devoured the whole lot.  Question is ... could this make such a difference to egg output or have I just been lucky?

What type of chooks are they?   Well they've got feathers and two legs each.  Other than that, I haven't a scooby.

I just knew there would be some very hard questions.  I'll have a count next time but I figured I'm nearly 50% up on what he was getting.

No, eggs, you nyaff !!

Well there are 10 chickens, a big kick-ass cockerel, and a sawn-off little squirt of thing which looks like it belongs in a museum.

So ... I've given them twice as much kale and have a signed contract for 10 eggs per day until his nibs gets back!  :D

Thanks Aunty - I was thinking of your Gertrude and Harriet "killing a large dog" as I was lugging the kale down to his place.

His hens are outdoors alright but the pen is devoid of all vegetation.  He doesn't have a veggie garden so I'm not sure what greens he has to give them.   I feel a barter deal coming on here ...

Only a bit, all those veg you grow you could well substitute there diet.
A hen eats about 4 1/2 oz of feed a day, a bag of non GM  layers is 25kg for £5.50. So that's about 3p a day/ hen ..

Or is it your Scot's "careful" side coming out
