Buying Chickens - Swansea
« on: October 02, 2009, 12:45 »
Hi All,

I'm looking for some advice on the best place to source 3-4 hens. I live in Gower, just outside Swansea. My current plan is to go to the Llandeilo poultry action at the end of the month, but I would appreciate any advice on buying from dealers/breeders (if anyone can recommend any) nearby.

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers,
Stu

Hi Stu, have you had a look on here:-

I wouldn't go to buy from a poultry auction unless you really know what to look for.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I agree with Joyfull,
If you are going to an auction you need to know what you are looking for or take someone with you who does, but saying that there will be  lot of chicken people there you could talk to for advice.

Hi - are you willing to travel??? There is a good place just 3 or 4 miles from Bridgend. It's local to me - has a fantastic reputation too! I got my girls from there earlier this year and then some hatching eggs a couple of months ago. All healthy and well. Great place!! They are in the Yellow Pages.....the poultry mill. Think website is poultrymill.co.uk or something very similar!! Would recommend it over and over again!!!

I know a couple of our members do go to Llandeilo auctions and say good things about it.  Brian and I went to an auction with poultry in it on Wednesday.  there were a few things I would have liked, but there were a lot of young cockerels there being sold as POL pullets!! namely ones that looked like Buff orpingtons!

there were also loads of black silkie cockerels there, but they didn't have a label on so couldn't see if they were being sold as pullets or cockerels.

there were a few ill looking birds and I didn't like the way the auctioneer was helping to put them in the cages.  he was picking them up by one wing and just shoving them through the gate in the cage!!!
