Sprouts covered in black and white fly
« on: September 29, 2009, 17:52 »
Hiya , Can't believe I've had my plot for a year now! .... Will discover next year if I have inherited my Gran's greenfingers or if it has all been beginners luck !

My sprouts are coming on nicely , protected by netting from the pesky pigeons , however they are covered in black fly and white fly. I keep spraying them with a water and washing up liquid solution  , but this really isn't having much effect at the moment.  >:(

Any suggestions what I can use , ideally I would like to keep them as organic as I can , but having already sprayed my tomatoes to fight off the blight , I don't suppose it really matters much!

Thanks in anticipation
Keep smilin'

Give em a good soaking via a watering can with a good quality washing up liquid and water - i think a table spoon of w.u.l  mixed with a full can of water will sort em out.
Do it again after one week, just to be sure......good luck

My psb has terrible whitefly and it is now covered in horrible black sticky mould, or rather, the sticky stuff has caused the black mould  :tongue2: I should have done something about it sooner, but now I'm just planning to wait for the cold weather to kill em off and pull off the worst affected leaves. Whitefly seems to be one of the hardest things to prevent I find. Marigolds are recommended as companion plants but my marigolds don't seem to have helped at all.  :(

While we're on the subject, can anyone tell me what this is, that's appeared on the tops of my sprouts and broccoli plants?

The sprouts growing on the, errr, sprouts, seem to be reasonably happy (so far) but, for the second year running, I have absolutely no earthly sign of the broccoli "fruiting" - last year I put it down to them being eaten away to skeletons by Cabbage White caterpillars but this year both sprouts and broccoli were planted together in a raised bed and surrounded by a netting cage all summer, which seems to have kept the Cabbage Whites off, but some of the lower leaves fell victim to slugs and snails.

Anyone?

Veg? That's chips, innit?

Could do with a closer up photo, but it looks characteristic of damage by mealy aphid. One or two may be visible in the piccie, but I can't quite make them out.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You're right  - that'll teach me to snap with the phone.

I'll take the Nikon out this morning and get a proper shot!

Boil up some rhubard leafs and use the water to spray the flys with.
    Very effective. :)
I may take my time.....but i'll get there in the end.
