Moving gooseberry bushes
« on: September 28, 2009, 16:13 »
Can anyone tell me about moving gooseberry bushes. ie. when is the right time, and pruning etc .
Someone on our allotment is going to give a couple to me, but I am unsure of what to do.

Sorry to sound a bit grumpy, but I'd bin em ! ! !   I got so fed up with the thorns  >:(  on mine that I've done just that.
Have already replaced them with jostaberries (no thorns, and a good blackcurranty flavour).

But if you like gooseberries .....

Gooseberries are now a forbidden subject in this house, specially after wife trod on GB thorns -- straight into the soles of her feet !

Good luck, with em, anyway.  :D

Anytime soon is best, (October/November).

Try to prune the centre out a bit so it's a saucer shape. This allows the air to circulate & prevent mildew & makes the fruit easier to pick, so avoiding Tode's experiences.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

OH really likes them, so got to give them a try, but they are well established bushes, Hope I don't get problems with too many thorns.

Hedge your bets & take a few cuttings at the same time in case they are too established to move. I've know very big ones to move OK though.

Have you seen what sort of fruit they give ?   Mine had tiny little things that weren't really worth picking anyway.

I think Gooseberries are the bovver boys of the fruit patch.

My opinion is, as you see, a bit biased.   ;)
