sowing peas
« on: May 06, 2007, 21:40 »
i have just bought some peas (early onward) and dont really know what to do with them. Do they need supporting? Do you plant in rows? do you start in pots and then transplant? How many plants per row?

Sorry about all the questions but i really dont have a clue.

Thanks
new to this, so all help and advice is greatly appreciated and well needed!!

Plant them in a shallow trench about 5 inches wide and 1 inch deep plant about 2 inches apart allover the trench and cover with soil.  Mice can be a problem.  Some people soak the peas in paraffin to deter the mice.  I set mouse traps and cover with chicken wire cloche to stop the birds getting caught.

The will need some sort of support. Sticks or netting is popular.

Hope that helps

i sow mine in alternate triple rows and support with pea sticks. i sow 1/4  rows at a time. i do the same with dwark beans and use taller sticks for my french beans (my sticks are sweet chestnut tops - i've found these to be the best for supporting peas etc)
