Really Silly Question:
« on: September 26, 2009, 18:43 »
I made lots of soup with my excess of tomatoes, and I froze loads of it into individual tubs.

I really fancy some soup right now, how do I heat it? I have no microwave, so that is not an option.  They are in tupperware tubs... Would I just tip the frozen soup into a saucepan on a very low heat?

That must be frustrating when you are hungry, if you know in advance you can let it thaw then it reheats much easier.

Ive often wanted one of my frozen soups to, didnt think of heating it slowly like that.

I dont have or really want a micro wave.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

I make all my soups and stews in small portions, then get one out of the freezer for tea.  I do bung it in the microwave for a minute or two just so that I can get the lid of the plastic container off without splitting it, but then the contents go into the saucepan and are cooked until bubbling away.

Haven't killed myself (yet)  ::)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You could boil the kettle and stand the tub in it if they are ok for boiling water or tip into the saucepan and put pan in boiled water.  That would start the melt off and maybe less chance of burning the soup as it gradually defrosts on the hob.

On the other hand when I get a sauce out I run under hot tap and just heat in a saucepan.

Depending on how often you eat your home-made soups you could stick one in the fridge now and then to let it defrost gradually.....it'd keep fresh too for a while.

When / if we have frozen tomatoes we often just drop them into a casserole and leave them to it.... adding a bit of extra time for cooking. Soup adds to the sauce..

You should never boil soups, only gradually heat!  Boiling takes the goodness out of the soup and impaires it!!!!   :tongue2:
I actually knew something

I slowly heated it in a small pan, and it was delicious.

I think I will do the fridge thing the night before, even if I don't eat it as a soup, I can use it as a sauce for tea.

Thanks all, much appreciated.

Oh, and I broke the container it was in, splintered into a gazillion pieces when I took the lid off! :(

Run it under the warm tap for a little while...stops them being so brittle :)

I usually add a drop of water if I'm thawing something in a saucepan, otherwise occasionally the very first bit to defrost will start sticking on the bottom.
