A digging over question
« on: September 26, 2009, 17:48 »
Hi all I hope you are all having a wonderful in this nice weather.

I want to know what to do with my allotment. I have only taken on the allotment this year so have only used one half of it. I have noticed that many people have started to dig over the allotment after they have harvested. Does this have to be done on the side that I have not grown anything on or can it wait till next year (a few months before I plant anything)?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Do it now and add humous to get nutrients into the soil.

ie Muck or sow a green manure.
Top tip for camping....don't go.

Fling some compost or rotted manure on as you go. You've got all of the autumn and winter to do it so just do a bit at a atime.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I would pile compost, collected lawn mowings etc on your beds and let the worms do the digging. Or sow a green manure crop and let the frost knock it back in winter - again the worms will pull this down and save you digging.

Too much digging goes on, which spoils the natural composition of the soil.
