Growing between spuds
« on: May 06, 2007, 11:29 »
G'day,
I'm busy bunging everything in my slug farm plot and am fast running out of room. In a book I've got it states that you can plant things between rows of spuds. I've put me lettuce in and I'm thinking about bunging me french beans and peas between them too. Anyone done that before ???
Also, I found some lettuce growing among the weeds, I think it's from last years that went to seed. I've transplanted them to between the spuds. I've been told by the bloke next door that he's never known lettuce to self seed before in all the years he's been gardening. Anyone here had it happen ???

You want quick growing stuff don't you?  like lettuce and radishes, wouldn't peas and beans take a bit long???

True, it's just that I'm running out of room. I've decided to grow me runner beans up wigwams, that should save a bit of room.

I have tried intercropping in potato rows, its a waste of time, what with weeds and you might want to earth up the potatoes a bit more, I gave up on all intercropping for things get to close to each other.
All the best

I've had self seeded lettuce often when I've forgotten to harvest them and they went to seed. I don't know if they don't overwinter well in some areas - it's usually mild here. This week I noticed some self seeded tomatoes too.
