Rationing Chicken Fed
« on: September 25, 2009, 09:35 »
Hi guys and gals,

We have recently taken up the hobby of keeping chickens.  We currently have 5 but going to buy more this weekend.

With regards to food we have noticed that as soon as we let the chooks out in the morning they eat all the layers pellets.  They also have some brown toast which they love.  Basically i want to know should we only put out a set about of pellets each morning so when its gone its gone and no giving in.

Cheers for any advice.

they should have layers pellets all day, dont ration them, they will eat what they want to.
treats should be given late afternoon, layers have all the nutrition they need, and they should fill up on these.

I put a full feeder out each day and they can help themselves.  I don't ration them as some eat more than others.  I put the food away at dusk then out again in the morning so the rats/mice aren't tempted to come in for a night banquet.

you need to put more pellets in, they should be available to them all day. they contain all the nutrients (sp?) they need. treats should be given in small amounts and in the afternoon otherwise they will refuse to eat the pellets and fill up on treats :)
