Carrot Fly
« on: September 24, 2009, 09:58 »
I was thinning my late carrots yesterday morning and I have carrot fly damage, but only to one variety out of the four planted... it was a globe variety.

Is this likely to spread to the others?

And no, I didn't take any measures... other than thinning in late evening.

Cheers.

Carrot fly maggots will certainly move between plants in a row. Not so sure that they will move across between rows so I suspect you had a visit from egg laying carrot flies.

The carrots i sowed in  nearly 4ft barrels (eskimo) got attacked by the root fly but the carrots (maestro) i sowed in a bed protected by a 2 1/2 foot clear perspex box did not.
Maybe they were knocked unconscious flying into the perspex ;)

Some old lottie boy told me carrot flies don't really fly....they tend to crawl. He reckons my raised beds are too high for them (18") and I haven't had any probs yet (touch wood!)

They do fly but they're as rubbish as cockchafers but without the lift.... they get a few inches off the floor then it's down to the breeze pretty much.... That said I grew Resistafly this year and was very happy with the results... no fly damage....
