So what breed IS my hen?!
« on: September 22, 2009, 09:24 »
Hello all...

I am in a pickle!
I am going to try to post a piccie of my hen Rosie.  I was sold her as one breed, but lots of people have said she looks like another.......
Shall I tell you what breeds are being mooted?  Or shall I try to avoid biased answers by keeping quiet and seeing what answers I get?  :D

So, what do you all think?!   ???  Also no idea how old she is; was told she was 30 weeks old but she hasn't started laying yet and still looks rather young to me?!
Am a complete novice though ...

I was sold her as a barred wyandotte Aunt Sally....
I feel a bit of a ninny because I obviously don't know diddly squat, and it appears that she is a maran....
hmmmm!
Thanks for the vote for maran though roughleehandled - and it's encouraging that she might be younger than we thought and might actually produce some eggs at some point!!!

... it's not that I mind if she's a Maran rather than a Wyandotte, I love her just the same  :) I just think I've bit ever so slightly conned......

Maybe... except that I said "So, does that mean she's already laying?" and he said yes.....  which wouldn't really fit with 13 weeks....
Plus, the light sussex pullets that I bought at the same time were apparently 16 or 18 (can't remember) weeks old at the time (a month+ ago) and they look about the same size as Rosie.  Well, the healthy one does , one of them is a bit of a runt; keeps falling over, rather knock-kneed and wobbly and much smaller and lighter.  Sigh.
They were also riddled with lice after 1 week and got quite anaemic - look better now after a many-pronged approach and tlc!
Sorry, I think I'm just unlucky, don't want to slag the breeder off, because I probably should have known better and was just naive and inexperienced.  We live and learn!

Oh that's easy!  She's a CouCou Maran.  I have one.   She's a lovely bird!
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!
