SUNFLOWERS Grow for feed for wild birds
« on: September 20, 2009, 11:29 »
Hello can anyone tell me which seeds I should use for growning sunflowers so I can use the heads for wild bird food. I am not interested in height in fact shorter would be better. I am thinking that I would simply dry out the heads (any thoughts on this IE do I need to do it). Thank you very much for your time JB

The expected height is usually on the packet. I have grown Sutton's F1 Full Sun this year which have stood well at about 5 ft with 12 inch wide heads full of seeds.

This year they have ripened well. If it is wet they can sometimes go mouldy but usually I just leave them to it. I grow them as shade for my pumpkins and squashes. The birds have taken a few seeds but they have not really go into them yet while there is plenty of other food about.
