strawberry pests
« on: September 19, 2009, 16:45 »
My perpetual strawbs (put in this year) are STILL flowering and setting fruit but some have been got at by various pests including the green capsid bug. :(
Question 1 Should I cut them back now to allow the crowns to strengthen before winter and not worry about fruit? I have already been cutting off any runners as they appear.
Question 2 Can I let the chooks freerange in the bed to get rid of the pests without them disturbing the crowns too much? :unsure:
I'd like to make sure next year's harvest is good!
Hope someone with strawbs AND chickens can help please, please, please!

I would cut any old leaves off and any flowers / fruit as it is getting late in the season and as they are this year's plants it will help to conserve energy for next year's harvest. I have hens but not in my veg garden so I don't know if they would do any damage to the crowns as they pick off the bugs. It might be better to spray them as some bugs like greenfly can infect plants with viruses - don't know if capsids do.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Chickens will get rid of the bugs but I have found they do more damage than needed with strawberry plants.  Also, they tend to tear the leaves a bit when trying out the new menu.  If you think your strawberrys are tough enough go for it but be prepared for some damage.

I reckon if the strawberry bed is well established the chooks shouldn't do too much damage if allowed in for just a wee while. But - if it's a new one they will oik the lot out looking underneath the plants for grubs  :blink:

Thanks Lerner.
I spent ages trying to think of a clever riposte to your strawberry chicken crack and came up with eggs....omelette....but I must admit I've never tried a strawberry one!!! Pancake would be nice....icecream.....mmmmm :nowink:
Anyway I cut off about 5 lbs of unripe fruit (most were healthy:() and all unpollinated flowers, scraped off the straw and there were LOADS of bugs. Left it uncovered for the girls to root around  and they ignored it completely ::), preferring to chase spiders and woodlice when I raked up branches and leaves for a bonnie. Can't blame them....less effort. ;)

Give them time - once the novelty has worn off else where they'll stick their beaks in and get rosey.  ;)

Not worried about name spelling - my real one is rarely correct either  ::)

As for spelling in general - it's too late to fuss.

I must get tomorrow's werk finished!!  ::)
