Rhubarb bolting - what now?
« on: May 04, 2007, 13:04 »
Hello

One of the several inherited clumps of rhubarb on the lottie is bolting - great big tall frothy flowery fronds.

I know nothing about rhubarb, really, other than that it goes well with ginger and sweet cicely.

Does the bolting have any implications for the clump?  Time to dig up and split?  Slash and burn?  Carry on as normal?  Dance widdershins at the full moon around a bonfire?

Advice gratefully received.

I think you cut out the flowery bit asap. maybe split the clumps up a bit in the autumn and mulch them with manure.
Then try the dancing.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I got given some which was just beginning to sprout, back in March. It has come up quite small so far. Just putting it down to maybe shifting it too near to flourishing time. It will go towards perfecting Nigela L's recipe for Rhubarb Schnapps (basically place rhubarb in neat vodka and leave for 6 months).

Take out the flower shoot , the rhubarb will be fine, the dry weather may have caused this ?But I'm no expert. I have been giving my rhubarb water to try to get the stalks to grow thicker before pulling. If it is a big clump it does benefit from digging up in autumn and splitting, but the first year after that there wont be much of a crop, lots of manure helps too.We split our clumps 2 years ago so weather permitting should get a mighty crop this year!

not at all apes you can pick it all summer long of established plants, the early pickings are best as they tend to be more tender but for a ruhbarb crumble keep picking a few stalks, dont completely pick all the stems of one plant though
feed the soil not the plants

As far as I understand ...

... you do tend to stop picking around July, but only because you should always leave 3 or 4 leaves on each plant.  And after about July the plant seems to stop putting on new growth, so picking time is over!

You probably already know not to eat the leaves because they're poisonous.

Cut the flower spikes off as soon as you see them ... don't pull em, cut em!

Suspect you also need to be naked, then deflower the plant. There could be lunar repercussions with this........
