Another raspberry cane question?
« on: September 17, 2009, 19:39 »
Hi all, a friend has given me a few raspberry canes, they ve got a rootball, chopped down bits & 2 ft of new cane which look a bit battered, they are supposed to be summer fruiting but have not fruited this year, what shall I do, plant as they are or cut down, any advice appreciated :)

Leave them.

To stand any chance of getting fruit next year they have to have this year's cane to fruit on.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thank you, do they need the tops or will they branch out, I'm asking because some of the tops seem to be missing. Cheers DD.

As far as planting is concerned, just trim up any broken or damaged canes (cut cleanly just below the damage), and bung em in.  Try to put plenty of mulch round them (straw, leaves ....) to keep the roots damp and cool.
Sort out the pruning bit once they're growing.
