WHAT CAN I PLANT IN BIG TUBS FOR WINTER
« on: September 17, 2009, 10:28 »
I have about 8 very large plastic tubs used for growing potatoes.  What can I put in them over the winter. Any ideas?

How about kale? They take up a bit of space each plant, so you may find one per pot suits.

More spuds for Christmas? You may have to line the pots maybe, use new compost and fleece them later to protect against frost...

Am I not too late for spuds.  What kind do you suggest.  New to veggie growing this year so not up on my spuds yet. kale sounds nice, tried some in the raised beds this year, did really well, very tasty then suddenly chomped to death by catterpillars.

With the weather the way it is, I would say you'd probably still be ok for a second crop... I'm new to it all myself, but I was speaking to one of the OBs on my site and he's doing his this weekend and isn't particularly worried...

I've put in Red Duke of York for boilers and Ulster Classic for roasties... lots of people on here have raved about... I can't remember the name. Anyone?

Oh, there's been a few threads, do a search for Christmas Spuds!  :D

Hopefully it wouldn't get caterpillar'd too badly over winter . We're having a go at using some of our spare winter space for it this year.

Thanks for that I might have a go at both.  I'll let you know how they go.  Seems a shame to not use the space.   :)

I think you'll find that you are too late for there to be sufficient growing time till Christmas - they should have gone in in August.

Landgirl, can I ask you not to use caps lock even in your questions - there's no need to shout at us  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If you're into salads you can get winter lettuces, hardy mustard leaves, start spring onions for next year, garlic cloves go in soon, winter cabbages......more to a tub than kale?

I would guess calling them Christmas potatoes is purely marketing  ;)

Hoping that if we fleece them they should be ok into early next year, although saying that we do tend to get our worst weather in January/February here.

First time we've tried it so just have to see   :)

Sorry about the caps lock, will  not do in the future, was a mistake.  Have actually used a couple over the weekend for excess garlic bulbs.  Not overtly worried about spuds for Christmas so will try some for srping time.  Will I need to cover in fleece to keep warmer?

Thanks for all your suggestions
