Huge holes omg..............
« on: September 17, 2009, 10:19 »
I have noticed 3 large holes appear on the edge of my garden, they are about 15 inches wide if not bigger , I'm not sure what they are, we did find a dead rat about a year ago but haven't seen any evidence since then. All the food is removed from the chicken pen at night and all the stock is stored in the garage, we do have a hedgehog that comes out every now and then because I catch it drinking the water  HELP

they are allowed out, they are free range :)  I don't think they are dust bath holes, they are much to deep and wide  :nowink: when I stand near the holes, I feel as if the soil is about to give way - omg I think I have got a monster burrowing under my girlies

Rabbits?  Any droppings as a clue?

Sounds like moles?
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

Moles are really quite easy to catch, but you need to have the right traps, and do it properly.
No good messing about with beer, mothballs and gadgets that cost an arm and a leg.

Or a good cat - mine had three moles at the beginning of the year and we haven't had a problem since!

You're lucky Rubellite ! !
But then, seeing what we spend on cat-food, maybe a cat comes under the heading "Gadget that costs an arm and a leg"

Moles wouldn't make a hole 15 inches across though, would they?
If you sweep away the mound of earth you find a hole like a rat hole.
Badgers? Rabbits? Or back to the fox.............. :(

I had a peek in the hole before I threw all the earth back in, it seemed to branch off into a tunnel  about 5-6 inches wide, if anything had jumped out I would have had a heart attack and probably peed myself..............
