Worth trying dithane??
« on: September 16, 2009, 22:04 »
No, not spuds, but very rusty leeks (Autumn mammoth IIRC) - last year's were cr*p as given to me very late by a friend, so no time to put on growth. These were going great guns until about 10 days ago, now all are affected to a greater degree. They're tall, but not thickened up much yet - looks like I'll have vats of soup then.................... :(

Also..................

Have just got 50 onion sets to go in, how far away should they be planted - they were going into a nearby bed about 8 foot away with kale & PSB in between
thanks

Dithane is reccomended for controling rust on leeks. It will not kill the rust already there but will reduce its spread to new areas of leaf and more importantly to new leaves. Apply it every 7 days until the weather gets cool. The affected leaves will probably die off eventually but new growth will be OK. Give the leeks some liquid feed to get them growing away.

Leek rust and onion rust are a different fungus so no need to worry about where you plant the onions as it will not spread to them

Thanks for that useful post Salmo, I always learn something from you  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
