just a quick one on pears
« on: September 16, 2009, 20:02 »
Hey all

I was just wondering whether anyone could tell me if I'd be ok to give me chooks some pears to play with, I've heard alot of people say don't give them apples because of the pips or something, so I was just wondering the same thing about pears.

Ooo and turnip tops, they'd be ok with turnip tops right...after all us humans can eat them and whats good for us is good for them...right?

Hi jo.

I'd not heard that about apples. No sure what truth there is in it, bu we've chucked apples in before.
Go for it with the pears, I'd say.

And the turnip tops. SOMetimes they're fussy about greens. Can be a bit snobby I think  ::)

HI,
Mine get apples and pears and they love them. not to much mind as it may give them the squits.
don't know about turnips - don't like them myself.

Plums are by far their favourite fruit and cabbage their favourite veg.

thanks rob and oborne, that was quick.

Well they will be getting theier first pears tomorrow then :)  I don't know how much truth there is in the apples either but i'm of the thinking better safe than sorry :(

Mine love cabbage, specially curly kale, think i might try them with some plums then too...if theres ever any leftover that is lol.

Anyway, thanks guys.

I am sure thats wrong about the apples, lots of people keep chucks in orchards and they eat all the windfall :)
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

after our trip to the vets this afternoon, pip and i stopped at Morrisons, i did some shopping and bought a big bag of seedless grapes £2.48, when i went to get some tonight there was only the twig and a few small squashy grapes left, "who's eaten all the grapes? you greedy so and so's" pip started to look uncomfortable and after interrogation she confessed, she'd bitten them in half and fed them to the hens.............

apple pips contain cyanide but they would need to eat nothing but pips to get ill (so does clover, apricot kernals, plum stones, and most other things in our gardens)

Hi

We've found that ours will eat absolutely anything ... honestly, they haven't turned their noses up at anything yet ... even found them all fighting over a mouse the other day

Ours love cabbage and rocket (grew more than we can eat).
They will not eat turnip tops or carrot tops.
They love cucumber, melon (without the seeds) and grapes.
I've noticed that Poppy is the one for her greens and Buttercup just hoovers everything up.
Goldie is more of a fruit girl.

Mine love over ripe tomatoes but will mug you for sweetcorn :nowink:
I buy big bags of frozen sweetcorn from Iceland and thaw a bit out now and then. Very cheap.
My lot will not eat greens except for weeds, when I have been weeding I just empty the bucket into the pens and they love it.

Well, they enjoyed their pears, and plums, and turnip tops.
They haven't really turned their noses up at anything...YET!!!
Having a little trouble trying to get them to eat the layers pellets now...I think i spoilt tem too much lol.  Any advice on getting em to them?  Should I perhaps soak them in water and mash them into their vegs so i know they are getting all the nutrients they need?

i let my girls out in the garden as soon as i wake them up, just while i poop scoop the coop, them i put them back in the run, with only the layers pellets till lunchtime. this way they fill up on the pellets before they start munching all the yummies in the garden :)
