What were your top five...
« on: September 15, 2009, 20:23 »
crops this year?

I'm going to use this as a slot on my radio show this weekend (see Chatting on the Plot, sorry don't know how to link the thread, for details of how to listen/contribute) and thought you might all like to contribute so I can read it out!

Mine are, in reverse order:

5 - garlic.  Was brilliant to watch it growing over winter.  Will definitely grow more next year.
4 - onions.  Still have plenty of them and really like having them strung up in the kitchen.
3 - tomatoes.  Grew way too many but love being able to go outside and pick myself some tomatoes.  The neighbours have enjoyed them too.
2 - cucumbers.  Have really loved these and have been kept in cucumbers all summer, have also given some away.  Taste so different to the supermarket ones.
1 - beetroot.  Can't get enough of it and absolutely love it.  Will grow even more next year so that I can pickle lots and make chutney too

What are yours?

Oh, and I think 'herbs' might be cheating - think you have to pick one!

So many lovely herbs to choose from, but it has to be my flat leaf parsley.  I've been picking it for months and it hasn't bolted yet.

Not in any particular order...

Mange Tout. Only grew them as an experiment (as one of my lottie neighbours didn't like them last year, and donated the seed). They seem to yield an awful lot given the small space they occupy.

Cobra french beans, reliably good cropper and very tasty.

Spring Onions (white Lisbon). Get them in early, and keep sowing every 3 weeks. Lovely taste.

Mrs B says the Garlic (Germidour) Very large tasty bulbs, lasting the whole year!

Habanero Chillis. WOW. definately growing these again.HOT HOT HOT!!!

So much to chose from, it's all sooooooooo delicious!
5. Courgettes, 100's of them. Best recipe - courgette and brie soup.
4. Raspberries, every morning for breakfast.
3. Sweet corn, done on BBQ
2. Dwarf beans, dripping in butter.
1. Kestrel Potatos, absolutely yummy roasted.
The less time you have, the more becomes available.

5. Carrots
4. Onions (Silverskin & Centurion)
3. Pumpkins
Joint 1. Tomatoes (only ones on our site) & cauliflower (finally)

That's so far, the list may change by the end of the year as there's still untried crops like BNS that have gone loopy, leeks, parsnips, sprouts...........
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

So far this year -

1.  Red Onions - first time grown (seed and sets).  Excellent.
2.  Outdoor cucumbers - first time they have done anything, but finally got the knack
3.  Runner beans - how many bags in the freezer?
4.  Potatoes, particularly Pentland Jav. and Kestral
5.  Tomatoes - despite the battle of the blight!

But ask me again in January when the winter crops are in.  Could include parsnip or leeks or sprouts or swede ....
