These are the prices I got from Sarah at B&K yesterday.  Their diatomateous stuff in large quantities is really good price.

I'll have to work out my pennies.    P&P is £7.50 unless you spend over £150

from kitkat's entry, there is a post on the practical poultry website, they have discussed red mite, and found that some of their members have had woodchip delivered from felled trees, that are alive with red mite, and believe that it has been feeding on wild birds, and hence is spread about into coops when people have wood chippings delivered.

search under their pests heading for the red mite posts

my coop is on legs 2' tall to form a dust bath underneath, and i soaked the legs and ramp in creosote before the chucks arrived, which may be why they have not got into the coop, any on the birds have to run the diatom and poultry shield in the house, which keeps them down.

raise your coops and creosote the legs, keeping the creosote out of the coop, and denying acces to the mite.

Facts
Your birds will get red mite.
They are a part of Nature.
The will pick it up from the ground.
Red Mite can travel long distances.
Red Mite can live for a long time.
Red Mite like new wood.
Red Mite can not live in a clean plastic coop.

Our job is to make sure Red Mite do not live in the Coop and feed on our Birds when they are immobile and Roosting.

No.1 Way to do your job is to always have removable perches and check them every day for red mite.

YOUR BIRDS ARE GOING TO GET RED MITE.
JUST DO YOUR JOB.

Ruff, i know they will nearly always get them, but there HAS to be some things they dont like, after the reading i've done[and Martyn] i think the type of trees has something to do with it. I have a garden full of trees, my birds only go under 2 of them and they are fir,[dont know what they're called but one smells really strong]. I haven't had red red mite[yet]. Apart from all the chemicals there must be other preventatives :)
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

I've just cancelled my order for an Omlet Cube. Several of my friends and acquaintances have got the Omlet Eglus or Omlet cube, and they've all had/got red mite this year.  What decided me to cancel my order was that a friend in Manchester called me this morning to let me know that her cube (plastic)  is infested with the #@&*%~# things.  She cleans out every day but found the mites a few days ago and followed the Poultry Shield programme, but when she took the cube apart a couple of mornings ago, the joints were heaving with red mite.  She rang me to ask what to do.  What do I tell her? Red mite cannot live in a clean plastic coop?  It takes a couple of hours to take a cube apart and the same amount of time to put it together again.  She works full time and taking apart and putting back together the cube again is seriously compromising her family life.  She's giving her hens away and says she'll get some more next springtime.
So I'm not going to waste money on an Omlet Cube when it can have the same problems as any other coop.  I'll buy myself a couple more hens with the money I've "saved." :D

Yes, I believe what you say, all the birds will get red mite, and yes it is part of nature and they pick it up from the ground and they live for a long time, but people new to keeping hens have been "thrown in at the deep end" this year and it must be very discouraging and frightening for them to realise that keeping a few chooks has it's advantages and also it's disadvantages the same as keeping any other animal.

There is life after red mite  :) :) :)

I thought that the cubes where on piece of moulded plastic.

I wish   According to the Omlet customer service, it takes between 1 1/2  to  2 hours to put the cube together (when you know what you are doing ), but can take longer.
The little Eglu takes an hour plus.
If you read the forum/replies on the Omlet site, it confirms that is the time it takes, and sometimes more.
The cube weighs about 45 - 50kgs.
