Disaster
« on: September 14, 2009, 20:53 »
yesterday Pip and i sat with the garden gang in the sunshine, i noticed one of the crested cream legbars (about 10 weeks old) looked a little off colour, nothing drastic, he just didn't seem as lively as the others, we checked him over, no crawlies (no redmite in the houses) no discharge from nose or beak, no rattley chest or laboured breathing, he felt a bit light, but was not thin, droppings were "good ones" he just seemed a bit lethargic, so i thought we'll keep an eye on him, i checked at 5.30 this morning (up early for work) and he was dead :( 2 of the others seemed off colour so i moved them into the brooder, gave them water and food, switched the brooder on and left a message for pip, she checked them at 8 and they were fine, by the time i finished work and picked the kids up, it was 3.45, one of them in the brooder had died, on checking the garden gang we found another poorly one ( same age different breed) we put them in another brooder in my bedroom, by 7 we both knew they were dying and not wanting them to suffer got Sam to do the deed, the rest of them that were in the same house are fine, i have no idea what went wrong, Pip is devastated as we had no chance to take them to the vet, all we can do is watch the others and at the first sign somethings wrong get it to a vet asap (daddy's on standby) Pip is devastated as these were her babies she hatched, i can't believe that they could be struck so quickly, and that they have shown no sypmtoms of any disease, i think we have a silent killer :(

Really sorry Rom. :(

Wish I could offer some suggestions. Can only think of poisons (but normal poo?), virus (but too quick?).

I hope this is the end of it.

Oh TMG! thats terrible news  :( could it of been coccidiosis? as i know not all strains produce blood in the droppings?
I lost 5 earlier this year with the same symptoms as you describe, fine one minute then a little under the weather then dead!  :( it was only after i scrubbed out their brooder (which i do every week but had seen nothing before then) i spotted 1 tiny drop of blood!
Sending hugs for you and Pip  :(

So sorry to hear this.
I agree with Debbie, Cocci can happen like this, there doesnt have to be any blood.
I lost 5 chicks overnight to this earlier this year. Put the others on coxoid straight away, it cant hurt.
Fingers crossed for you.
Jenny
There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.
