Which small tomato for a beginner?
« on: September 13, 2009, 11:24 »
I am thinking of trying a few potted cherry tomatoes next year which will be growing in a plastic greenhouse on the patio for warmth and instant picking.

Any recommendations?

I was looking at Lylia Cerisette on the Chase Organic Catalogue site.

If you mean a small tomato and not  a small tomato plant I grow current goldrush (yellow) and current sweet pea (red). Very small tomaots about 6-8mm across.

Plants get about 5-6 ft high. Need a stake and pruning to maintain a cordon.
Great for salads, just pick them and drop them in.

Sold by podseeds.

I grew one last year, can't remember the name, but it has the word Pearl in it.  Grew them in hanging baskets - had lots growing on them.   This year, I did Tom Thumb (I think) cherry toms, again in hanging baskets - double the size of the Pearls, but just as nice.  The good thing is, you can hang them outside.  But remember to really water them.  Occasionally, I dunked them in the tank of water that we have, not submerged, but enough to really give them a good watering, on top of using the watering can.

Garden Pearl would you believe!

We've also grown them sucessfully in hanging baskets, much to the amusement of the nieghbours.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I planted two large pots with Hundreds and Thousands and they have been really prolific, will definitely grow them again next year.

I would be looking for either a cherry tomato I could keep in my plastic greenhouse, so no taller than say 2 feet 6 inches including the pot, or a variety I could raise as a hanging basket.

Hundreds and thousands was a winner for me too.

Amongst others, I also grew Tigrella in a mini greenhouse and it cropped extremely heavily (and is still cropping!) I know it's not a 'little un' but might be worth a look?

Gartenperle?  I grew them last year.  I got a good yield, and they were early enough that I managed to harvest some before the blight struck.  The taste was OK but not outstanding, and the texture was a bit wooly for my tastes in cherry tomatoes, which is why I didn't grow them this year.

I grew Tumbler in a pot this year and it is producing lots of lovely cherry tomatoes. Doesn't need staking or pinching out, just give it a bit of feeding and bingo. As the name suggests, it just tumbles over the side of the pot.

Now I remember, Tumbling Toms - better than garden pearl, with larger cherry toms as well.  We even grew them on the office window.  In fact, the outside ones did better than indoor.

Another vote for tumbling toms, a couple of plants have been producing like crazy all summer.

when you mention hanging baskets for tomatoes, do you use the conventional sized ones - about 14" across or are you using the much bigger ones? I presume one plant to a basket of course and much feeding.

I tried one plant of these, and they were the only one not affected by blight - although remember not to drop them in with the runner beans when picking, 'cos they vanish!
