Calabrese dilemma ...
« on: May 02, 2007, 12:55 »
... it looks like my tender baby plantlets haven't taken too well to their new home on the plot.

The transplanted sprouts and cauli ... all done on the same day ... seem fine.

So ... do I re-sow seeds under cover or on a seed bed on the plot?  Bearing in mind that on 12th May I am disappearing to the sunshine for a week and my unheated greenhouse and coldframe will be monitored on a daily basis but my plot will be watered once whilst I'm away ...  :?

personally I would start them off in the greenhouse and I wouldn't have put them outside just yet as the nights are still rather chilly.. we were down to 2C the other night.

Mine are all ok and not covered, I put caulis out ages ago, purp brocolli and red cabbage went out about 2-3 weeks ago. Must be our tropical climate  8)

I would resow in an outdoor seedbed.  They'd just about be through by 19th May and so no worries about cold nights.

You're just up the road from me Wellingtons and temperatures haven't fallen below 8 degrees outside at night for the last three weeks so I have to agree with W-G and say sow outside.  Suggest watering the drill thoroughly before you put the seed in and that should see them through any dry weather whilst you are away.  Going away myself for a week shortly and I'm more concerned with the fluctuating temperatures in the greenhouse then the plants outside.

... with daily watering and a bit of a talking to about half of them have perked up!

So I'm going to sow some more seeds just in case, keep watering til the end of the next week ... when I devil off on hols ... and hope that the babies survive and the seeds pop up!  Going to sow them in a seed tray, but outside, at home where they can be looked after.

callbrese ,, are like women  treat em soft to start n then let em roughen up a bit .dont water em every day  and make sure the soil is pressed down hard around em same with all brassicas . lime in a circle around the plants they like it hard and tough as this stops them running off to seed .. nothin werse than a woman...ooops cauli gone to seed
