Brassicas, manure & lime
« on: September 09, 2009, 21:20 »
Yet another question from this newbie!  This time about my brassicas...

I've got some little plants ready to go into the ground at my plot - spring cabbages, PSB and cauli.

I also have a ton of extremely well rotted horse manure.

Question... would the brassicas appreciate the manure?  Or would spring-planted brassica's do better?  It is really well rotted but I don't want to put plants in when its too strong.

Also... do I have to lime?  I know about not doing it the same time as manuring but, is it really necessary?

Thanks!  (again  :) )
Lisa

The man who taught me said no manure but loads of compost and to lime about two weeks before planting out.  You should see his brassicas! And mine are loads better following his advice.

His advice was good enough for me to turn in a red cabbage that won a prize in local show with persnickety judges when I'd never grown from seed before so he must know something.

Query - PSB at this time of year?

Not saying you can't, but mine is about 3' tall & ready to over winter at that size.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Testing your soil is the best way of knowing if you need to lime, but I always plant with a handful of lime, and topdress throughout the season. My caulies and cabbage have surprised me this year by how well theyve done.  Use the manure to dig into your next years spud bed instead, and dump a bit (if you have any) of compost in your brassicas bed for your new babies
