Disappointing Sweetcorn!
« on: September 09, 2009, 16:25 »
Grew about 20 or 30 "Sundance" this year - some in pots - most in deep beds, sufficiently spaced and they have got as far as large cobs starting to form... and then just stopped. We got to the stage of the tassles coming from the end of the cobs but no change at all after that - now it looks as if they are starting to die off. To investigate I pulled a few cobs and all we got was one full cob - the rest have started to form a few bits of yellow corn at one end and that's it!

Anyone any idea where I went wrong?
For the latest on the BIG project, read my blog.

Corn needs lots of warmth and lots of water, if not they wont grow, and just dry out.
I wouldn't think they would do very well in a pot (unless very large), but I expect others will have had succes.

Not getting grains on the cobs is probably due to poor pollination: the pollen from the male flowers at the top has to fall down onto the female "flowers" (silks) on the cobs. Which is why they're always grown in a block, to prevent the pollen being blown away and lost.
Better luck next year  :)

I did c***p this year on sweetcorn.  Plenty of sunshine and rain - corns were pretty small.

My wife and I have just had our first cobs, the first we've ever grown as we got our allotment in April this year. They were wonderful, and plenty more still on the plants.

I have about 12, they all hot tassels, all felt nice and firm, but the 3 I have pulled off so far (over the space of 2 weeks) have been only half grown, or fully grown but solid corn not squishy.

Now I dare not touch the others, even though the tassels have all disappeared.

Riala: you mustn't leave too long, or theyll be rock hard. Pick when silks have just gone brown.
I put a pic somewhere, but dont know how to link it.

*sigh*

I was told on here to wait until they 'had' gone brown, not just brown.... dammit.

They were like this, and I was told to wait longer!

I suppose the jury's out on this.

My corn is never ready until the silks have gone a really dark brown and practically died off. I'd never contemplate harvesting cobs like those in the picture.

You should be able to feel the corn underneath the husk without peeling it back.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That's too early Riala, they're still golden.
Wait till brown and dryish. And the grains should be pale yellow:

And the old test...peel back the husk and stick a fingernail through a kernel.  If its milky juice coming out its ready..if its clear it isnt

Strange really - they were in quite deep beds by and large - just a few in pots... and in blocks too - still never mind - there's always next year! Thanks, peeps!
