Autumn bliss raspberry picking
« on: September 08, 2009, 18:31 »
I leave them until they are dark red sweeter that way but some have a greyish whit dull bit on the little balls that make up the raspberry.  Am I leaving too long, is it just where they are rubbing against each other or the fence, are they ok to eat, I have already and not dropped dead.

I freeze them for smoothies, when taking out of the freezer sometimes they taste like ice cubes that have been in there too long, although still raspberry taste and not been in there longer than a fortnight, what do you reckon that is?  I wash them before going in the freezer and they seem dry when they go in.

Thankyou
Sheila

I wouldn't wash them before they go into the freezer. That might help. I would think that you are leaving them a tad too long as well.

Boy do they ripen quickly. I'm now in the habit of picking a batch each time I go to the allotment every couple of days, eating a few of course, washing them and adding them to the large container in the freezer that already has a few kg of them.

And the good thing with raspberries is when frozen they don't stick together too much so it is easy to take out just what is needed at a given time.

Sounds like it doesn't it but they are not that bad i.e. I would still put them in my mouth.  The bits like that are dry on the outside.

I've got some fruit like this as well :(
It looks to me as if the dry/grey bits haven't got a tiny berry part only a grey 'seedy' looking bit. I assumed that it may be only partial pollination?.............. ???

Try tasting one with a grey bit straight off the cane. If it tastes OK, your prob may be shield bug juice on one of the berries, which can give a funny flavour to them all.
I always pick before they're ready to drop. Just when you need to pull slightly.
If you need help tasting them, I could help you out.  ;)
