onions to show
« on: September 06, 2009, 19:08 »
hi all,
i,m entering a small village show which i think will be friendly and not exactly judged by the book,, i hope anyway..
i,m alittle confused how my onions should look,, should they be the golden.brown or should this be peeled off? the single pic had the skin peeled away a couple of weeks back but has started to go golden again. as you can see i have a few spares so any advise would be brill.
many thanks

Bailey, you must ALWAYS  show according to the show rules. Otherwise you will be classed as NAS  Not As Specified. If you want serious help, then getthe book, " Growing and Showing Vegetables " by Tom Fenton. :D Your onions, by the way, look very good.

What is important is that the skin is not split. Nice golden brown is good. Evenly matched set will beat large mis-matched ones.

Agreed - if it is a group of 3 uniformity is the key. As mentioned above though the should be specification for each category.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

well the show was today!

spent last night deciding which were the best to show, chose to enter largest onion and 3 onions,, obviously chose my largest onion for the largest section and for the 3 onions chose the 3 that were more uniformed in colour and size..

results: largest onion came second and the 3 onions came first,, as well as a second in another section i,m quite chuffed1 first time i,ve netered anything like this and its nice to get tasty results for the table but also nice to win something.

so can,t wait for next year now!!

but some of it may have not been possible without the help of the folk of this forum who have given me advise when i have needed it and i,ve learned loads from just reading other posts and the replies given, and the encouragement given when things seeem to going downhill... so many thanks to the other forum members.

well done bailey!
If you pull them a few weeks before the show, remove the outer skin then smother them with talcum powder. On the day of the show they will polish up a treat. Also use raffia string to tie them up.

congrats..
