Harvesting pumpkins
« on: September 05, 2009, 20:05 »
Hi all,

I've read various posts and pages about when to harvest pumpkins, and the advce seems to be "leave them to ripen" plus "harvest before frost" - but I'm wondering whether to harvest one of mine now, and would appreciate advice. I've got a couple of Rouge, and a couple of Jack O Lanterns - the Jack o lanterns are still green so I'm planning on leaving them, and two of the Rouge are still yellow, so leaving them also. But the biggest of the Rouge has turned orange in the last few days and sounds hollow when I tap it.  So I'm wondering whether there is any benefit to leaving it on the plant, or should I bring it in now?

Thanks in advance for all advice

Sal

I'd harvest it now. It won't get any bigger.

Let it fully ripen at home.

I have grown pumkin for the first time this year after being given 4 surplus plants.Although a couple will be used for Halloween,I also intend trying some recipes.....but how do I know when the pumkins are ripe please?

It should be orange all over and when you tap the pumpkin it should sound hollow.
