Strawberries in September?
« on: September 03, 2009, 22:23 »
I planted some strawberry plants late in October last year.
This summer I allowed them to flower & fruit (modestly).
They are all much bigger now and flowering/fruiting again, however the fruits have a slight bitter after taste.
Any suggestions or explanations on this please.
Should I have cut the flowers off?
Correctio, Accommodo, Maturus.

Could be that your weather tricked them into fruiting again, but as most strawberries are spring flowering types dependent on that daylight length and cooler weather, that could account for the less palatable berries you're getting now.
Normally after the spring fruiting, you should clip off the old berry leaves (turning red) and feed the plants to rejuvenate the overall plant health. this sets them up for good cropping the next year.

This year I have prepared a fruit garden. The woody bushes are doing fine and I should be having fruit next year. The strawberries were sown in March and are now cropping. There are lots of marble sized green berries. This is their first crop but I don't think there is enough sun and light for the crop to mature.
Will I get a crop or should I cut them off now?

They could be perpetual flowing types, which I grow and they are flowering their heats out and fruiting. I still get strawberries into October. If it is very wet, I will use a cloche to continue the fruiting in a dryer environment.
