I think some people had to pick them because of blight.  I know it has been rife this year and extremely widespread!

Even Miss Cox (Sara) from the BBC Dig In got hit, and I am sure she would have had help and advice from all corners of the BBC's gardeners. A shame for her as a first time growing. (my first time with toms too) but, hopefully she will bounce back, as the rest of us will!  :D

My dad always puts a ripe bananna in with his to ripen his toms, he swares by it.

My Cherrolla tomatoes have been excellent, in the greenhouse and outside and have been ripening well.  I have been picking them since mid July.  I did try the banana at the bottom of the plant, but not sure whether this helped or not.  They are turning red each day without the banana now, so can't claim that it works.
