Cauliflower seedlings
« on: April 30, 2007, 10:57 »
It looks as though my second attempt at cauliflowers is going belly-up.

Seeds were planted in peat pots and left on a windowsill which gets sun in the afternoon, and never left to get completely.

Just like my first batch the seedlings have reached their third-leaf stage and are about 4cm tall, but the edges of the leaves are beginning to curl and die.  My broccoli, squash and bean seedlings are thriving so far on the same treatment.

What am I doing wrong? Will I ever eat curry made from home-grown cauli?

Plenty of time to resow cauli.  This time put them outside as soon as they break the surface.   I'd get your broccoli hardened off and outside asap too.

... brussels, cauli and broccoli indoors and then as soon as they're up and looking healthy I get them into a cool greenhouse.

I think that indoors is just too warm for them, and they really do get quite leggy quite quickly if you keep them in too long.

Thanks for that.  I'll let them go outside to play and see if a few can be revived.

Absolutely.  As an experiment the other way, take a piece of your worst weed into the greenhouse and watch it go sickly in less than a week.

So if I put a greenhouse over the entire veg patch I wouldn't get any weeds???

Actually, you are partially right, I never get as many weeds in the greenhouse or polytunnel as I do outside.

Damned by faint praise eh, GA?  I didn't say they'd die, I said they'd be sickly.  Lots of soft growth and leggy stems ... just what happens to the poor cauliflowers which then get thrown outside and expected to thrive.

my first batch of cauli and brussels went belly up too.  so now its a bit warmer here, as soon as the new batch showed their heads i took the top off the propgator and put them outside in the cold frame. they have lasted longer than the others did so far. it could have been the proximity to the radiators in the house they didnt like.

im just playing it by ear so dont take my "method" as gospel

How about growing them in a smal seed bed? You don't need a big space. I've got mine growing merrily away in a bed..try it :)
