I keep them separate for the simple reason is that cuke plants are crawlers and climbers, and would quickly swamp the tom plants of all available light by growing right over them. Try leaving a cuke plant alone for 1 day and you'll be surprised where it's wandered off to. The cuke tendrils will tighten tom vines right off given a chance. Toms need all the light they can get so the 2 are better off away from each other.

I've witnessed the tendrils on cucs wrap themselves round everything near by.  My cucs and toms are outdoor ones so think they will be ok together they aren't that near to each other, simply next to each other.

Hi, I have alway grown them together with no problems. I cut the tendrils off and only allow 1 or 2 shoots to grow and train them away from the tomato plants. I grow "petita" variety which fruit on the main stem and are easier to control.

Good point - my mum had to grow them indoors; tomatoes in the greenhouse, cucumbers in a cold frame.

Year before last I had tomatoes on the south side of my greenhouse and cues on the north side, both lots did well, no probs and last year toms on hte east side of my polytunnel and cues on the west side, still no problems.

So another piece of conventional wisdom goes out the window!  Just goes to show that practical experience beats books every time.  :D
