Puzzling cabbages
« on: August 30, 2009, 07:44 »
Put in a load of cabbages at the end of last year. They didn't form heads but sort of bolted and we cut the leaves as they grew to use like spring greens.
Despite covering them the cabbage white attacked and soon they were decimated. As the compost heap was already overflowing I left them in the ground.

They seem to have grown a long thick stalk along the ground and sprouted further cabbages from the stalk. These too are being ravaged by caterpillers.

But, if I cut off all the damaged bits, covered them to keep out insects wanting a free meal, would more cabbages grow from the stalk, and would they be edible?

I will probably give it a try, but thought I would ask to see if I could save time.

I started out with nothing.....and I've still got most of it.

when you cut a cabbage if you then cut a cross in the stem you have left in the ground it will grow more leaves, it probably wont heart up like a cabbage but it is enough to be able to harvest the leaves, so i guess it is the same thing.

at hte end of the day it is worth a try

I've tried this in the past but the leaf crop was poor (quantity) and I decided that the space they took up would be better used sowing fresh plants.
