Dwarf French Beans - Support Canes?
« on: April 29, 2007, 20:38 »
Hi all
Never grown Dwarf French Beans before but got some coming along nicely from seed in the greenhouse, soon to go in the allotment.  What I don't know is how to support these - do they need just a smaller version of the type of cane structure I use for Runner beans?

They might grow taller in sub-tropical Peterborough than they do in the sub-Arctic Highlands!   Maybe someone further South can post ...

One thing for sure ... get them hardened off before they go leggy.  Outside in the open during the day ... inside or double-fleeced at night.

I grew some a couple of years ago and they didn't need support.  They were not much more than a foot high and very prolific croppers, could hardly keep up picking them.   :D

Great, I was wondering exactly the same thing, so thanks!

I'm just starting to harden them off now.  I plan to plant in pots on my balcony - the pots are about 12 inches diameter and 20 inches deep.  Can anyone tell me how many plants to put in each pot?  I was thinking maybe two per pot, or would they be overcrowded like that?  I also have the same question about sweet pepper plants - 1 or 2 per pot?

Thanks in advance!
Kate

Never ever used supports on my dwarf French beans. The name kind of says it all, don't you think?   Can't wait to hear Munty's take on this - he's back, by the way.

Hi DJB,

My first year of growing these too and my old Dad reckons to plant a couple of rows quite close together, that way they kinda support each other.

I'll let you know later in the year if it worked.

I planted a whole packet in three pots last year as we were moving and I intended to plant them out, but never got round to it.  Even overcrowded like that I got loads of beans from them, they are very forgiving.

Erm, sorry Trillium, this is my first year growing veg (on my balcony) and nowhere on the packet does it define what "dwarf" actually means- I bought them thinking it would be a smaller plant to grow in a small space such as the balcony.  I was hoping this forum may be somewhere to get help from experienced veg growers, not sarcastic comments like this!!  Thanks to everyone else for their helpful answers.

Been looking at mine today - some of mine  do look like they need a cane for support and tying in.

I wonder could it be that maybe I got the labels  mixed up :!:
