liquid feed for seedlings
« on: April 29, 2007, 20:34 »
I've got some Tomorite for my tomatoes, but when do I start feeding them with that?

And do I need to buy specific liquid feed for my other seedlings? I've got chilli pepper, bell pepper, sweetcorn, cucumber, butternut squash and leeks.

thank you.

Don't feed Tom's untill they are in their final planting place andthe first truss is formed, else you will get loads of leaves and little in the way of fruit, you can feed tomorite to any thing that forms fruit and also your flowers. Leeks would probably benefit from a higher % of nitrogen than the rest.

Don't need to feed anything at seedling stage.

thanks guys, I guess that my onions would benefit from a nitrogen rich feed too? Is there a brand that anyone recommentds, or can I use anythning from the garden centre?

My leeks are about  6 inches tall, and my onions (grown from sets) are about the same. Should I given them a bit of a feed now?

ta!

Brand choice is a personal thing, really depends on how & what you want to feed, me I say wilko's  foliar feed type for a quick fix anything in trays and pots. In the garden I use wilko's growmore or chicken manure pellets.

WG will have similar suggestions but organic based I'll leave those suggestions to him or one of our other organic gardeners as they will know more than I do.

Oh and yes I would start to give them a weak feed 1/2 strength.

Maybe, tomato-joy, you could please indicate in your signature whether you consider yourself organic.   Saves me replying if organic is of no interest.   Indeed, I'd find it really handy if other folks did this too please.

I only feed my plants once a month, Other times I have two water butts filled with water and a bag of horse poo hanging in side of it. It turns the water a dark brown and is very good for the seedlings and the plants. Try that if you want to. It works every time.

Hi all, I hope you have bean working hard on your plot the way I do.

If you want to lose the Tomorite then comfrey liquid is a perfect (better?) organic option with very good potash content.   Same thing for your cucurbits.   Peppers I'm growing for the first time myself so don't really know.

gillybees manure tea is higher nitrogen so good for your leeks BUT I don't feed leeks directly - the manure I put in the ground does that.

If you don't get a contradictory answer, I'd suggest you feed your peppers manure tea + a little comfrey liquid.

Does the manure bag in the water work equally well with chicken manure?

That is really high in nitrogen.  It will also really stink, big time!

I couldn't recommend it since some of the nitrogen content will be lost as it is converted to free ammonia & this gas can burn foliage.

What I would suggest is to use the chicken manure in your compost heap & then make a compost tea instead.   Even after the first turn, the composting process will have tamed the chicken manure significantly.

You can also use chicken manure raw on your comfrey patch & make comfrey liquid from the leaves.
