Homemade Incubators.... Help :(
« on: August 26, 2009, 16:11 »
Hi again,

I have been trying to make an incubator (unsuccesfully) for ages now.

My stumbling block is the thermostat.

I have tried using the maplins one.... it blew up.... I have also tried using Habistat thermostats for reptiles..... they are set too low temp (92) though I can overcome this with a bit of air conditioning in the corner where the probe sits :)

But has anyone used the Habistat thermostats, if so which one.... or can anyone tell me how to adapt another type of thermostat??

I am desperate... my little incubator is tiny and only holds a few eggs and I have 18 to put in.... there will be no where for them all to sit :(

Please help a desperate woman ;)
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

Hi Chookiechook

Just a thought but eggs put into an incy now are not going to be off heat till end of October :( It's going to be quite a shock when they get put outside :(

Can't help with the thermostat sorry :(

:( :(  I did think of that too :(

I have planned to keep them in a light airy shed with a heatlamp for them to use if they want it :)  Not the most sensible of ideas I know, but the kids will kill me if I change my mind.

These are the first chook eggs that I have tried.... I got such a good deal for purebred bantam eggs that I couldnt resist (now I know why) :(

I am used to hatching quail and they live in my utility room till they are able to go outside.

although I agree with Vember it really is a bit late to start incubating this year, perhaps you could make one and then try in the spring  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

If the hens are tried and tested broodies (ie done it more than once before) then they "should" be ok :) as the hen will gradually get them acclimatized quicker :)

'thats great thanks :) :)

We will see what happens :)  My leccy bill may be a bit on the large side if I hatch any more now, so maybe the kids will have to wait :)

The broodies can give it a go if they wish :)   I suppose they know best :)
